Kia’s EV4 Launch in the U.S. Put on Hold Indefinitely
Trump’s new trade measures and tariffs are shaking up the auto industry once again—and this time, Kia’s highly anticipated EV4 has taken the hit. The South Korean automaker has officially indefinitely delayed the U.S. release of its upcoming electric sedan. Luckily, Canadian buyers won’t be affected.
The Kia EV4, initially scheduled to hit U.S. showrooms in early 2026 with an expected starting price of around $30,000, was positioned to be one of the most affordable electric sedans on the market. It was first unveiled to great excitement during last April’s New York Auto Show, signaling Kia’s growing dominance in the EV space.
However, that optimism has faded quickly. In a statement to InsideEVs.com, Kia USA confirmed:
“Market conditions for electric vehicles have changed; the introduction of the new EV4 sedan will be delayed until further notice.”
Trump’s Tariffs and EV Policy Shake-Up

This move follows a wave of restrictive economic measures rolled out under Donald Trump’s administration. The most damaging among them is the elimination of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which has already hurt consumer demand and made EVs less competitive against traditional gas vehicles.
On top of that, new import tariffs are further raising production and logistics costs for automakers like Kia, forcing them to reevaluate their pricing and profit margins. These combined challenges made the EV4’s planned U.S. launch financially risky—leading to the indefinite suspension just weeks before international test drives were set to begin in Spain.
What We Were Supposed to Get
The 2026 EV4 was built on Kia’s e-GMP platform with a 400V electrical system. The base model was to feature a front-mounted 150 kW (201 hp) motor powered by a 58.3 kWh battery, offering an estimated range of 378 km (235 miles). A higher-trim version with an 81.4 kWh battery was expected to deliver over 530 km (330 miles) on a single charge—making it a strong competitor in the mid-range EV market.
Canada Still in the Clear
While American EV fans will have to wait, Kia Canada confirmed that its EV4 rollout remains on schedule. That means Canadian drivers can still expect the car’s arrival in early 2026, unaffected by U.S. tariffs or policy changes.
The EV4 delay highlights just how much political and economic policies can ripple through the global automotive industry—especially as the race toward electrification heats up. For now, the future of Kia’s EV4 in the U.S. remains uncertain.
